Moving Breath

MOVING BREATH, five women imbued with the spirit of goddess, was originally formed to produce She Changes, a collection of songs from healing circles. This recording has since become a favorite resource for those who wish to learn the songs as well as providing an up-lifting experience for the listener.
With their second recording, She Dreams, Moving Breath presents 13 original songs, to inspire, uplift and heal. Their style is difficult to classify, therefore we venture to suggest a new musical category - Numinous World Music - songs of spirit, of the sacred, expressed through musical styles from around the world.
The strength of Moving Breath's compositions abides in their inventive vocal arrangements and luscious harmonies. To those they add an eclectic array of instruments in She Dreams, which includes: acoustic guitar, electric bass, electric piano, folk harp, tenor and bass recorder, Native American flute, silver flute, bowed psaltery and synthesizer. Also featured is a variety of ethnic percussion instruments: conga, djembe, Native American drum, talking drum, claves and rattles. The result is a delightful montage of songs which are reflective of the versatility and individual personalities of each of Moving Breath's members.

The Five Women of Moving Breath

Mujiba Cabugos is an holistic health practitioner by day and a musician and flamenco dancer by night. She has studied piano, guitar and recorder and has accompanied touring Indian artists on tambura. Her love for all the varieties of the world's musical styles is reflected in the original chants and songs she has contributed to both She Changes and She Dreams. With partner Valerie Girard, Mujiba provided the initial impetus for the formation of Moving Breath. (also "tingsha") (and "Zaramaya")

Valerie Girard is a doctor of chiropractic by trade and extends her orientation towards healing through music and her work in theater. She has studied guitar since childhood and has been composing since age sixteen. Her original songs and chants, included on both recordings, reflect an expansive connection to the Divine and to the Earth. Her interest in multimedia presentation has inspired her to co-write a musical with Ms. Cabugos as well as perform, choreograph and direct various performance art pieces that have incorporated original Sacred music and poetry.

Lorin Grean was raised in a musical family. Over the years she has developed her musical abilities in addition to cultivating a career as a graphic artist. As a child Lorin sang on children's albums and commercials. She has performed in Baroque and Renaissance recorder ensembles on the East and West Coasts. She also recorded on Robinson's Folk anthology Songs of the Working People, Kate Wolf's The Wind Blows Wild as well as on Kenny Loggins children's album, Back to Pooh's Corner where she collaborated with Loggins on a new version of the traditional tune Too-ra Loo-ra Loo-ra. Her love of the folk harp has been captured on her latest recording The Call as well as Embrace. Lorin's command of this sweet instrument and the recorder, compliments her lyrical vocals, all of which augment several pieces from She Changes and She Dreams. (also "tingsha") (and "Zaramaya")

Chris Leja celebrates the creative spirit. She is a maker of sacred jewelry by profession as well as a gifted songwriter. She has always loved to sing and has studied piano, guitar and ethnic percussion. She has provided the heartbeat for Moving Breath and several of her original compositions have been included on She Changes and She Dreams. Chris sang backup vocals for Embrace and contributed the poem Night Song to The Call. Her earthy vocals add a rich resonance to the five part harmony of Moving Breath.

JulieAnn Lewis's interest in music began at age eleven writing and playing original songs. Later she formed a duo with her brother singing original, pop and jazz tunes at various Santa Barbara night clubs. Subsequently she has participated in theater, video and recording projects. In addition to playing the electric bass, her silky vocals, lilting flute solo's and original harmonies brilliantly augment Moving Breath's unique and full sound.
