Many bands have stories about how they instantly "clicked" upon formation,
springing into fully formed genius as if no work was involved at all. The members
of Honey White had always thought stories like that were silly clichés,
but that was before they all got together in Santa Barbara and made the first
inroads toward their epic garage rock sound. "Fully formed genius" was definitely
not the result of that initial meeting, but it seemed readily apparent that
lots of musical and personal ground had already been covered, so with the basics
already in the bag, the new band began expand their musical horizons together
right away.
The brothers Bryn and Keir DuBois had been writing snappy pop/rock
songs since the beginning of their membership in another Isla Vista rock combo
called The Mojo Wire. When that band suddenly fizzled out, Bryn and Keir
recruited guitarist Brian Wolff, a longtime friend, to flesh out some
new songs and provide the "brilliance with mystique" part of the equation. Drummer
Billy Fedderson, transplanted from Oxnard via Colorado, brought his jazz-trained
chops, love for reggae and ska, and punk band experience (Boulder, CO's Fallaway)
in tow to solidify the others' genre-bending grooves.
Honey White not only immediately plowed into the chaotic Isla Vista vortex
of keg parties and guerrilla gigs, but also teamed up with other acts (Earl,
Buttcheek Doofus, and Thais Albert) in downtown
Santa Barbara during the following spring and summer. The band recently produced
their first professional release, engineered by Mark Anthony of Santa
Barbara Recording, and the resulting My Band Rocks
CD is a mini-album of songs about being thrown into the vital rush of life and
surviving to laugh about it later. Honey White is much more than the sum of
its parts; it's a special combination that continues to cross the epic scope
of arena rock with the economy of punk and the bounce of reggae into a vibrant
rock and roll stew that will one day stop at a venue near you.
