I think of myself as a bassist first and
a multi-instrumentalist next, but always someone who is interested in playing
creative music that comes from the heart. Over the years and a million gigs,
I've focused a lot on playing original jazz, folk and new age world beat and
tried whenever possible to use my music to support various environmental causes.
For the past 15 years I've directed the music
program at a private high school in Ojai California called Happy Valley School
enjoy helping teenagers find a way to express themselves through jazz, blues,
rock and folk music, and at the same time I get to jam all day.
I enjoy my family most of all; my wife and
soul mate, Karen and my two daughters, Roxann, and Kaya.

"Guthman conceived and wrote a wonderfully listenable instrumental album with
Scottish cittern as the centerpiece. Like the guitar and mandolin, it's a descendent
of the oud introduced to Europe by invading Moors around the 8th century. After
it was carried to other parts of Europe by the crusaders during the 10th century,
it enjoyed great popularity through the Renaissance. This album distinctly reflects
that period- the droning melodies have a meditative quality like the strumming
of a solitary minstrel in the moonlight. On this self produced collection, Guthman
expertly and emotively plays not only the warm-voiced cittern, but also the charming
and chiming tinglklet ( a bamboo xylophone from Bali), plus acoustic bass, fretless
bass, mandolin , acoustic guitar, and electric guitar." --Napra Review
