Free form poetry meets funky rhythms, and bluesy trombone solos meet animal
metaphors. EARL exists in a kind of parallel universe of music making.
Billy White Acre, who in 1994 was picked as Billboard's best songwriter,
described EARL as sounding like "Frank Zappa meets the Talking Heads at a Bar
Mitzvah."
The CD was recorded by sound alchemist, Robinson
Eikenberry, who managed to capture the excitement of EARL's live performance
with warmth and clarity. The album is full of textual nuances and lyrical surprises.
Past and present EARL members include; Earl Arnold singer songwriter
guitar & flute, Kristin Anderson on Saxophone, David Cowan on
lead guitar and bass, Mike Pownal trombone & keyboard, Matthew Droid
Riley on bass and djemba, Chris Thomas drums, Nicola
Gordon on backup vocals, and Paul Wilcox on harmonica and pocket
trumpet. Their debut album "I AM NEXT TO YOU" also
features harmonica solos by local blues legend Tom Ball and accordionist
Michael Gutin.
