Cascada de Flores is one of California's most beloved music ensembles. The
trio, with its talent and passion for the rich cultural heritage of Mexico and
Cuba, has elicited an extraordinary response from diverse audiences, media and
fellow musicians. Besides exquisite, emotive guitar melodies, much of their
repertoire features vocal harmonies that hearken back to the golden age of song
in Mexico and Cuba such as the Hermanas Padilla, Mendoza, or the duo of Maria
Teresa Vera and Lorenzo Hierrezuelo. Cascada has explored, as evident in their
debut album, diverse rhythms and traditions within México such as la canción
mexicana, la canción ranchera, el son huasteco, el gusto, la trova and el bolero,
and on their latest album continues with traditional trova, son cubano,
and boleros, as well as son from Oaxaca.
Cascada de Flores features instruments such as guitars (guitarra sexta,
vihuela, jarana veracruzana), vocal harmonies, tres cubano, flute,
claves, maracas, cajón, and zapateado (footwork), and in collaboration
with excellent San Francisco Bay Area musicians, violin, double bass, guitarrón,
bongo, and conga drums. The project was born out of collaboration
with a local Mexican regional dance company, and continues to grow through connections
within their artistic community. In 2003, the trio traveled to Mexico, to conduct
a research trip on son jarocho and further investigate the Caribbean
connection in Veracrúz. Cascada de Flores plans to continue touring throughout
California, nationwide, Mexico and extend to Cuba, bringing their CD and performances
to as many diverse audiences as possible.
