At the heart of Cascada de Flores is a trio featuring the crystalline,
passionate voice of Arwen Lawrence de Castellanos, the profoundly
emotive guitar of Jorge Liceaga, and the magical flute and exquisite
harmonies of Sabra Weber. The musical roots of these three musicians
are uniquely varied: Arwen, a mariachera and folklórico
dancer from Los Angeles; Jorge, from Mexico City, one of the finest flamenco
guitarists and Cuban treseros around; and Sabra, a flutist from
Iowa specializing in Cuban charanga music. From these diverse beginnings
they have united in their commitment to the emotion and grace of music
that grows from to tierra.
In 1999 Arwen L. de Castellanos and Jorge Liceaga joined talents to perform
music from the Mexican State of Guerrero at the request of Ensambles,
Ballet Folklórico de San Francisco. They discovered that they shared
a deep passion and respect for la música de antaño and thus seeded the
dream of creating a project that would allow for continual discovery of
Mexico's rich musical history. Destiny enlisted their mutual friend and
talented musician and dancer Sabra Weber and thus continued Cascada
de Flores. It was immediately evident to themselves and to their public
that the combination of such talent was magical and necessary in the context
of reliving the vital music of Mexico's fertile past. Cascada de Flores
has developed and blossomed into an excellent folkloric ensemble, branching
out to navigate the many diverse and creatively rich streams of Mexican,
Cuban and Latin American music and dance.
