The subtle jazz trumpeter-vocalist Nate Birkey is one of those artists
for whom reconsidering musical roots, and paying respect to tradition, is as
important as nudging tradition gently forward. He imbues warmth and broiling
energy into his music, as heard the inviting song set, Indelibly
You.
Nate is following up his last album with two distinctive new CDs, Ballads
and The Mennonite.
Indelibly You, Birkey’s first album on the Household Ink label, is
actually his third album, but the first under his own name, leading his quintet.
For several years, he led the band the Avant Gardeners, releasing its
debut, Kickin’ It in 1991 and Blue in 1993. At the same time, the Colorado
native has, for many years, been a pivotal member of the popular Santa Barbara-based
band Spencer the Gardener, a sparkly party band which has gained a huge
following on the west coast.
On his own time, Birkey’s understated vocal approach has often been compared
to Chet Baker.
"His biggest, boldest, most original statement as a musician yet."
--Steve Libowitz, Santa Barbara News-Press
